Winemakers
When he was a child, Giorgos used to take his mask and swimsuit and walk down to Super Paradise for a swim, when the magnificent beach was deserted... Back then, Mykonos was known only to a handful of artists and the happy few.
Today, Giorgos is a dentist in town and a winemaker in his spare time. Passionate about his work, he cultivates his grandfather's land, where endemic grape varieties grow. Keen to make these forgotten varieties better known, he goes in search of them on the island and in other Cyclades. He works and blends them to create surprising wines, unfiltered and with spontaneous fermentation. They carry all the richness of Mykonos, a land that is dry and poor, but also flooded with sunshine and unique aromas.
We liked the Potamisi, a dry, mineral white with a long finish, as well as the Retsina, which is as subtle as it is pleasant. The Xeronomia is a concentrate of indigenous and wild grape varieties. To be enjoyed almost without moderation.
Giorgos sells his small production of around 3,000 liters mainly on Mykonos, and his wine can be found on the menus of Sale e Pepe and Captain's restaurants. In Naxos, it can be found at the excellent Axiotissa tavern, or at Mikro Karavi in Tinos.
Giorgos Xidakis,
a winemaker in Mykonos
Mykonos may be a party town, but it's also a wine-growing region. Not far from Super Paradise beach and the Jackie O' club, Giorgos Xidakis cultivates endemic grape varieties and creates wines as surprising as they are delicious.
