MACEDONIA WINE REGION
APOS WINE MACEDONIA SELECTION
The Macedonian wine region in Greece, nestled in the country’s north, is one of Greece's most celebrated and historical wine areas, with vineyards dating back to ancient times. This region benefits from a unique microclimate and diverse terroir that ranges from mountainous slopes to fertile valleys, providing ideal conditions for both indigenous and international grape varieties.
One of the key areas within Macedonia is Naoussa, known for its Xinomavro grapes, which produce bold red wines with rich tannins, bright acidity, and complex flavors of dark fruit, olive, and tomato. These wines are often compared to Italian Barolos for their aging potential and layered depth. Amyntaio, another important sub-region, lies at a higher altitude and cooler climate, favoring the production of fresh, aromatic white and rosé wines, as well as lighter styles of red wines.
The region’s vineyards benefit from warm Mediterranean summers balanced by the cooling effects of the Aegean Sea and the Pindus Mountains, which create an ideal environment for viticulture. Macedonia's winemakers embrace both traditional and modern techniques, with many small family-owned wineries crafting wines with a strong sense of place and heritage. Recent decades have seen a rise in organic and biodynamic practices, showcasing a commitment to quality and environmental stewardship
